Grande Ronde Hospital | FY2017 | Community Benefit Report

For the second year, our Lab staff went to three Union County locations for free blood draws for health screenings. Providing health checks On three Saturdays during April 2016, our Laboratory staff offered free blood draws for health screenings in Elgin, Union and La Grande. We drew samples from a total of 135 people to test: w  w Hemoglobin and Hematocrit, a red blood cell screening that tests for anemia or polycythemia w  w Cardiac Lipid Panel screening for checking levels of cholesterol and triglycerides w  w Glucose counts for screening blood sugar levels Results were either mailed directly to participants or sent electronically to their online personal health record at the grh.org patient portal. The only requirement? A 9 to 12 hour fast from everything but water. OUR 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) showed us two areas of definite underserved need in Union County—access to mental health services and a prevalence of chronic illness. Our employees and the community volunteers who all work together to manage GRH Community Benefit Program made those the priority issues in fiscal year 2017. We worked together to support the creation of a healthy community by engaging community partners, promoting education and screening programs, and increasing awareness of chronic illness management. We are proud to share some of those highlights from an amazing year. Motivating fitness During the months of July, August and September, members of our Therapy & Sports Medicine team offered a “personal trainer experience” via their Fit in 5 program. Five free classes were offered every other week. Approximately 110 people of all fitness levels took advantage of the opportunity to improve their fitness levels enough to complete a 5K run or walk. Classes included evaluation of abilities, creation of personalized strength and endurance programs, core strengthening, and cardio improvements. Those partici- pants who completed four of the five classes had their registration fee waived for the 18th annual Grande Ronde Rehab Run held that September. Giving back to schools In late summer 2016, our GRH clinic staff provided 215 free sports physicals to student athletes from all communities across Union County. We also supported Central Elementary School’s proposal to us for a healthy snacks program. Our funding provided approximately 385 students with fresh fruits and veggies three times a week, from February through June of 2017. Additional efforts to support commu- nity partnerships for wellness included our participation in Central Elementary School’s Third Grade Healthy Lifestyle Exer- cise Program in October 2016. We provided pedometers for all children in the program, while our Therapy & Sports Medicine staff guided children through fun exercise and play. f l ourish & thrive HELPING OUR COMMUNITY We worked with Central Elementary School staff in support of its Healthy Lifestyle Exercise Program. Our free Fit in 5 program helped folks at various fitness levels improve their capabilities.
