A
strong foundation is the key to a
sturdy structure.
at’s true in a literal sense for a
building or a home. But it’s also true
in a gurative sense for hospitals.
ey depend on their foundation—
the philanthropic arm of a hospital—
for nancial support.
And these days, that support is
more important than ever.
Because many Americans requir-
ing health care currently don’t have
health insurance, hospitals can nd
themselves in a nancial bind when
people can’t pay their bills. And even
when people are covered by insur-
ance, reimbursement from insur-
ance companies and government
programs—such as Medicare—o en
fails to meet 100 percent of the cost
of care.
All of this, coupled with rising op-
erating expenses and a need to keep
facilities and medical equipment
up-to-date, means hospitals nowa-
days face many nancial challenges.
And that’s where philanthropy
comes into play—through the hospi-
tal’s charitable foundation.
A charitable foundation is the
mechanism through which hospi-
tals ask the public to help support
things—such as the purchase of new
equipment—that can bene t the
community.
Funds secured by a foundation are
raised in a variety of ways—from spe-
cial events and capital campaigns to
annual appeals and planned giving.
While cash—including check
and credit card—donations
are always an
option,
other
assets that can be given include:
w
Securities, such as stocks or bonds.
w
Retirement plan assets, such as
funds from an IRA or a 401(k).
w
Real estate, including a home,
other buildings or an undeveloped
property.
w
Life insurance policies that desig-
nate the foundation as the primary
or secondary bene ciary.
All gi s, no matter what their
size, can help a hospital and the
people it serves.
