a family of leading health care
providers that includes Grande

access hospital with 19 patient care
departments—including an expansive

provider consults and other support
services; comprehensive rehabilitation
therapy services and gym, home
health care services including
hospice care and grief counseling;
and seven provider clinics.
In fiscal year 2013,
Grande Ronde
Hospital, Inc.,
provided
$4.2 million in
benefits to the
communities
we serve.
One substantial measure of the value Grande Ronde Hospital, Inc., brings
to the region is the amount of the annual community benefit we provide.
We work hard to care for our patients, taking the responsible stewardship
of finances to heart while navigating health care reform and its accom-
panying rules for how we are to define, determine and administer our
community benefit.
Key to the success of our community benefit program is our not-for-profit
status. Being exempt from certain types of taxes allows us to provide those
dollars directly in benefits to the region and ensures we have the resources
needed to meet the evolving health care needs in the communities we serve.
In fiscal year (FY) 2013—May 1, 2012, through April 30, 2013—the
amount of community benefit that Grande Ronde Hospital, Inc., provided
was substantially more than the amount of forgone taxes we would have paid
as a for-profit business. In FY 2013 we provided $4.2 million in community
benefits—a $260,000 increase over FY 2012—including $2.1 million in char-
ity care through financial assistance for those who seek care but are uninsured
or underinsured. We do not turn people away for lack of ability to pay.
In addition, we still seek traditional opportunities to support healthy
activities and provide education in our communities beyond the federal
government’s definition of community benefit. We do this through good
community relations, sponsorships of sports teams and community events,
healthy-living awareness efforts, partnerships, and more.
